English Course for Adults Abroad: 4 Weeks Off Work

Adults rarely abandon the idea of studying English abroad because of the price. They abandon it because of the calendar. The course costs what it costs; four consecutive weeks away from a job, a team and a set of obligations is the thing that genuinely feels impossible.

It is not impossible, but it is a project, and it starts about three months before departure rather than three weeks. What follows is a countdown — what to do at D-90, D-60, D-30 and the final week — written for someone with a full-time job rather than a gap year.

One boundary first: employment law, leave entitlement and what an employer may or may not agree to differ completely by country and by contract. Nothing here is a statement about your rights. It is a sequence for having the conversation well.

What the course actually asks of your calendar

Before planning anything, get the real number. Four weeks of course is not four weeks of absence.

Realistic absenceabout 5 working weeks

The second row of that table is why people who book leave to the exact day come home exhausted. The first days go on a level test, permit paperwork and sleep debt — the honest shape of the month is in 1 month studying English in the Philippines, week by week.

If five weeks is genuinely unavailable, that is worth knowing now rather than after you have priced flights.

D-90 to D-60: the conversation with your employer

The single biggest predictor of a yes is that the request arrives as a plan rather than as a wish.

Decide what you are asking for. Annual leave, unpaid leave, a study leave arrangement, or leave with remote work in the evenings — these are four different requests with four different answers. Pick one before you open the conversation.

Frame it around the work, not the trip. The version that gets approved usually sounds like: this is the period where my absence costs least, here is who covers what, here is what I will be able to do afterwards that I cannot do now. The version that gets refused sounds like: I would really like to go to the Philippines for a month.

Choose the quietest window you can find. For most teams that is not December and not the start of a quarter. Being flexible on dates buys you more goodwill than any other concession.

Bring a handover draft. Even a rough one. It converts the request from a problem into a proposal.

Ask about the return, not only the departure. Agreeing in advance that your first two days back are catch-up days prevents the worst part of the whole thing, which is landing at 6am and being in a meeting at 10.

If the answer is no, ask what would make it a yes — different dates, a shorter block, partial remote work. A refused request in March is often an approved one in September.

D-60 to D-30: money, documents, handover

Book the course and the flights once leave is confirmed in writing. Not before. At most schools in the Philippines, including TALK, enrollment goes through partner agencies rather than directly, so allow time for the quotation to come back and for you to ask about what it excludes.

Build the real budget. The package, plus what you pay in pesos on arrival, plus flights, insurance and your own weekends. The government fees are fixed: ₱7,800 per SSP application, ₱4,500 for an ACR I-Card if your stay exceeds 59 days, and ₱3,000–6,000 per visa extension. A four- or five-week stay sits under the 59-day line, which is one of the few ways a shorter course is cheaper than proportionally. The rest of the structure is in what the quote leaves out.

Check your passport expiry today, not in the last month. Renewing abroad is a different order of problem from renewing at home.

Get photographs and photocopies made. Six to eight passport-style photographs and several copies of your data page cost nothing at home and a morning abroad — the full list is in SSP student permit: documents to bring.

Start the handover properly. Write down the things only you know. This is also the point at which most people discover their job is more documentable than they assumed, which is quietly one of the better side effects of the whole exercise.

D-30 to D-0: the last month

If you cannot get four weeks

Honest alternatives, with their trade-offs.

OptionWhat you getWhat you lose
Two weeksA reset and a diagnosisFixed costs dominate; the gains arrive after you leave
Two blocks of two weeksFits some work calendarsTwo flights, two arrivals, possibly two permit applications
Four weeks with evening remote workKeeps the job comfortableRoughly a third of the study benefit, and worse sleep
Waiting a year for a proper blockThe full effectA year

The two-week option is the one to think hardest about. It works if you already have a routine to return to. As a standalone attempt it is the most expensive way to buy a week of study — 4, 8 or 12 weeks shows why.

There is also an argument that this gets easier rather than harder with age and seniority, not least because older learners bring advantages that younger ones do not — what older learners do better makes that case.

In short

Start ninety days out. Ask for a specific type of leave, in the quietest window, with a handover draft in your hand. Confirm the leave in writing before you book anything. Budget five working weeks of absence rather than four, add the peso fees to the quotation, check the passport today, and put one commitment in the calendar for the week you get back. The course is the easy part; the calendar is the project.

More on getting ready before you fly is collected under preparation.
